Lecture 7a Flashcards
What is acquired brain injury?
- Damage to the brain that occurs after birth and is not related to a congenital or degenerative disorder
What is traumatic brain injury?
- Insult to the brain caused by an external physical force
Primary vs secondary TBI
Primary = occurs at the moment of impact Secondary = pathological processes that occur subsequent to the primary damage
Open vs closed TBI
Open = injury that causes break to skull and meninges to expose brain Closed = injury that does not do above
Focal vs diffuse injury
Focal = injury confined to one area of the brain Diffuse = injury involves more than on area
What is the Glasgow Coma Scale?
Measures degree of responsiveness (level of coma)
- Eye opening
- Motor response
- Verbal response
What is post-traumatic amnesia?
State of confusion that occurs after brain injury where the person is disoriented and unable to lay down NEW memories
- Severity is based on length
TBI/Concussion symptoms
- Confusion
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Memory loss
- Impaired balance
What is Westmead PTA scale
Administered once every 24 hours to determine PTA
Physical impairments of TBI
- Impaired ROM
- Sensory deficits
- Visual deficits
- Fatigue
Cognitive impairments of TBI
- Drowsiness
- Reduced attention
- Confusion
- Memory loss
Perceptual impairments of TBI
Visual processing difficulties
- Apraxia
- Agnosia
Activities and participation impairments of TBI
- Reduced personal and domestic self care tasks
- Community living
- Work/study y
- Leisure
- Relationships
OT role in emergency department
- Screening for post concessional symptoms
- Interview re occupational roles
- Screening for cognitive impairments
- Edu re TBI symptoms and recovery time
- Strategies to manage symptoms
OT treatment goals for PTA
- Monitor orientation and memory function
- Provide external structure to reduce confusion
- Using memory activity
- Engagement in ADLs
