Tutorial 11 Flashcards
1
Q
behavioural therapy?
A
- a disorder is a learned behavior through classical conditioning, operant conditioning etc.
- thus the therapy technique is to learn a new behavior
2
Q
exposure therapy?
A
- systematic densensitisation
- behavioural technique
- highly effective for phobias, anxiety, OCD, PTSD
- exposure to anxiety-provoking stimuli
- ‘exposure hierarchy’ –> sequence of increasingly fear provoking situations, this allows one to focus on one step at a time
- ‘flooding’ –> go for most intense, can also be very effective
why does it work?
1. natural habituation of anxiety within and between sessions
2. reduced perception of threat
3
Q
extinction?
A
removing a reward from an undesirable behavior
ie. the kid is naughty to go on naughty matt outside, so you stop putting him on naughty mat
4
Q
positive reinforcement?
A
operant conditioning –> reward behavior by adding a good stimulus
5
Q
aversion therapy?
A
a type of behaviour therapy designed to make patients give up an undesirable habit by causing them to associate it with an unpleasant effect
- unpleasant
- not long term fix
6
Q
modelling?
A
- observational learning, model a behavior to make someone do it
- therapist modelling
7
Q
punishment?
A
- rarely used in therapy
- not that effective
8
Q
biological model/ treatment?
A
- disorder is due to abnormalities in brain (as opposed to the behavioural model wherein it is due to learned behaviours)
