What is a medium turn
- Constant height
- Medium bank angle (20-30°)
- Constant power
- Balanced (ball centred)
How to maintain height in a medium turn
Back pressure
Rudder use during a medium turn (counteracting adverse yaw)
Apply same side rudder, so left rudder when rolling left and right rudder when rolling right
Steps prior to entry in a medium turn
Ensure you are at desired height and airspeed and in trim
- Lookout
- Select reference point for rollout
Entry into a medium level turn
- Eyes outisde
- Roll
- Balance with rudder
- Apply sufficient back pressure to maintain height
Maintaining a medium turn
- Lookout
- Maintain bank angle with ailerons
- Maintain balance with rudder
- Maintain height with elevator
Rolling out of a medium turn
- Lookout
- Anticipate reference point
- Roll out
- Coordinate with rudder
- Release back pressure
Required accuracy of a medium turn
- Alt = 100ft
- Bank = 5°
- Heading after roll out = 5°
- Balanced
Airspeed loss in a medium turn
The aircraft will tend to slow down by about 5kts, this is acceptable and so there is no need to increase power
