Forced landing - how to assess wind

A

Following clues:
- Smoke
- Windsock
- Ripples on water (at right angles to the wind)
- Drifting spray / dust
- wave patterns on crops
- Washing on clothesline
- Aircraft drift

A

Appropriate field is:
- within reach
- estimate elevation
- Longest available (choose the longest one)
- Clear of obstacles /unsafe surface features
- Surface is suitable
- Slope (upslope preferred avoid downslope)

Forced landing- personal drills + pax brief

A

Pax brief: James, we are having engine trouble. I am going to land the plane in a paddock below us. Please keep your hands and feet away from the controls and make sure your seatbelt it tight. Once we have landed get out of the plane and we will meet behind the aircraft.
