Turbocharger Flashcards
Purpose of turbocharger
To make exhaust gas useful
Name the steps
Engine air inlet Charger (compressor) Intercooler Engine Waster Gate Valve -> Exhaust OR ->Turbine Manifold Pressure Sensor Compressor
What air enters the air inlet
Filtered ram air or Unfiltered warm air
Purpose of the intercooler
Air is cooled to increase power because efficiency is increased through the higher density of cooled air.
Why does some exhaust gas bypass the turbine?
Waste gate valve allows excess exhaust gas to bypass the turbine and leave via the exhaust. Bypass controlled by the ECU.
What does the turbine do?
The turbine drives the compressor because it speeds up the air which allows the compressor to take in air faster.
Why is there a manifold pressure sensor?
The ECU calculates the correct position of the waste gate valve using the manifold pressure sensor.
