Fuel Flashcards
What fuel is used?
Jet A1
Minimum and maximum temperature
-30degC and +75degC
What can happen when the temperature increases over 75degC?
Can lead to a reduction of high pressure pump efficiency. Therefore reducing power on affected engine.
What is the fuel consumption of one engine?
4.5USGal/hr
Max usable fuel
50USGal
What are the 4 steps in each cylinder?
Induction, Compression, Power, Exhaust
What is the common rail?
It supplies fuel to each cylinder. A regulator and pressure relief valve control the fuel pressure in the rail. And they are controlled by ECU. The pressure is generated by the high pressure pump.
What are the fuel to engine steps?
Wing -> Low pressure Pump -> High pressure pump -> Common rail -> precisely Injected into cylinder on Induction stroke -> Compressed -> Self Combusts
What happens in the compression stroke?
Pressure and Temperature rise causing the fuel to combust and ignite.
What happens to the excess fuel?
Returned via the fuel cool to the aircraft fuel system.
Why are there glow plugs?
Glow plugs pre-heat the cylinders to assist starting
When does the low level caution appear?
When there are 3/4USGal remaining.
How many fuel drains are on the aircraft?
4, under both wings and nacelles
Describe the fuel tanks.
Each wing consists of 3 aluminium chambers connected by a flexible hose.
Purpose of Check Valve in the tank.
Check Valve with a capillary
- Allows air into the tank
- Prevents flow of fuel to outside
- Equals air pressure during climb
