Tundra vs Monsoon climate Flashcards
Tundra- location/climate
Around edge of land mass in far north/ artic circle. Avg temps less than 10C to -40C. Sun shines little/ no hours in winters and consists of permafrost. Has lower importance than Monsoon season as has lower pop of 13.1 million
Tundra- human activities
Population has declined but indigenous pop has grown through advanced healthcare. They are restricted because of climate and arable farming is hard. Caribou hunting common in NA but fishing, tourism and mineral extraction dominate
Tundra- dependence
Climate sustainability supports indigenous people. Inuit in N Canada hunt seals/caribou in winter and fish in summer. Sami of N Europe follow seasonal movements of reindeer north to treeless tundra in summer and the boreal forests in winter
Permafrost
Huge amounts of methane gas is frozen into the permafrost and will be released into the atmosphere if it melts which will enhance global warming. But if the permafrost melts there will be a potential to grow crops
Monsoon- location/climate
Over 1/2 of worlds population live between 21 Asian countries. They have mean temps of 18C and have wet and dry seasons. Wet season is May-October. The sun during this time heats the land intensively causing a low pressure system as air rises, sucking in moist air from the sea, bringing heavy rain in November. The sun heads south causing sea to get hotter than the land and the wind direction is reversed. Monsoon caused by wind direction change
Monsoon- human activities
Tourism
Farming
Fishing
Monsoon- dependence
For subsidence farmers survival depends on the nature of climate, but nothing is wasted e.g. making straw hats/bags. As long is there is sufficient water for irrigation, paddies can be reused in dry season for rice or beans.
Monsoon types
Weak= drought/crop failure Strong= flooding
