Climate smart agriculture (CSA)
CSA is an integrative app to address the interlinked challenges related to food security and climate change through:
Economic- sustainably increasing productivity and farm incomes
Social- adapting resilience of agri and food security systems
Environmental- reducing greenhouse gas emissions from agri
CSA in Asia/Pacific reigons
Welcomed by organisations such as the World Bank but only taken off in Japan, Vietnam and Philippines are members of the Global Alliance for Climate Smart Agriculture
Indian Agriculture Research Institute (IARI)
Carried out climate change adaption projects to test technologies/strategies for sustainable livelihood security in rural communities that are vulnerable to climate risks
IARI’s set of interventions to conserve resources and adapt to climate change
Superior seed varieties tested and successful ones made available in seed banks. Heat/stress tolerant varieties of major crop wheat were introduced increasing yields to 18%. Conservation farming practices also introduced as well as integrated pest management. Underground pipelines laid in farmers fields and used for delivering drip irrigation resulting in 40% saving
