Agriculture Flashcards
Arable farming
Farming of root crops, usually on flatter land where soils are of higher quality
Pastoral farming
Involves livestock rearing, such as nomadic pastoralism
Mixed farming
Production of both arable/pastoral farming, most common type in UK
Intensive farming
Involves high investment in labour/capital e.g. machinery or glass houses. Means high yields per small hectare
Extensive farming
Uses low inputs of labour/capital but involves large areas of land
Commercial farming
Involves farmers/agri businesses with a special use in single crops or raising one type of animal
Subsidence farming
Farming for themselves to feed family
Sedentary farming
When a farm is based in the same location all of the time
Nomadic farming
Farmer moves from one place to another
GM farming
Plant DNA has been modified
Organic farming
Farming without use of pesticides
Agricultural productivity (AP)
How many KGS of grain per hectare or KGS of meat per animal or L of milk per cow
Total factor productivity (TFP)
Is the ratio of argi output e.g. livestock to argi inputs e.g. machinery
Crop (TFP) improves by:
Disease resistant/drought tolerant crop varieties and efficient cultivation and harvesting practices
Animal (TFP) improves by:
Using better animal care and breeding animals for better genetic qualities
