  • Typically no brood stock
  • Wild juveniles are caught for aquaculture - not sustainable
  • Large amount of prey species are removed from the ocean to feed captive tuna.
  • Large amounts of waste food falls as pollution from nets.
  • Many species of fish are killed when they enter the nets full of fast swimming tuna

Explain the method of tuna aquaculture

A
  • Juvenile fish caught in wild using purse seine nets
  • Placed in cages and towed to farms
  • Juveniles raised in large farm cages for 8 months
  • Fed intensively 1-3 times daily (shellfish, sardines, pilchards, herring, mackerel and squid)
  • Scuba divers monitor feeding to prevent over feeding
