Giant clam reproduction cycle Flashcards
What are giant clams?
bivalves and benthic
How are giant clams sessile?
attached to substrate and unable to move as adults
What do giant clams do with their gills?
oxygen and feed
How are giant clams hermaphrodites?
they produce both male and female gametes
How to giant clams spawn?
externally
How is spawning triggered?
by phases of the moon and tides
What is SIS?
spawning inducing substance hormone
What is triggered by SIS?
neighboring clams
How does spawning work?
Sperm is ejected prior to eggs to reduce self-fertilization and promote genetic variation
How many eggs to giant clams spawn?
500million eggs per event to help improve chance of success.
How long does the egg stage last?
6-12 hours after fertilisation
How long does the trochophore stage last?
5-10 hours
Explain the veliger stage
- Occurs within 24hrs of fertilisation
- Development of shell (vellum) for protection
- Still in planktonic waters
- Continue to grow for 1 week
Explain the pediveliger stage
- A foot develops for attachment to the substrate
- 1-2 weeks
- Starts in planktonic waters and sinks to benthic environment
- Find suitable substrate (attachment sites and mating options)
What happens during the spat stage
giant clams grow for 2-3 years into sexually mature adult
