Aquaculture Flashcards
What is Aquaculture?
The rearing of aquatic animals and plants for human consumption
What are Exotic Species?
Species that are not native to a particular location
What is Extensive aquaculture?
Aquaculture that uses little technology, low stocking densities and no artificial feeding
What does Growth rate mean?
The speed of growth of a population in terms of numbers or size of individual fish
What is Intensive aquaculture?
Aquaculture that uses intensive methods such as high stocking densities and artificial feeding to maximize production
What is Sustainable aquaculture?
Aquaculture that causes less short and long term damage to the environment, economy, and local community
What does intensive aquacultrue make possible?
to have a relatively high density of organisms, which requires a high input of food and possibly antibiotics
What does rearing mean
bringing up
What type of density do extentive systerms have
a lower density than intensive
What are the factors that affect Sustainable Aquaculture?
- Availability of stock, for example, as larvae for rearing to adults
- Availability of clean water
- Availability of feed
- Efficiency and use of feed
- Availability of labour
- Disease management
- Availability of location
- Market demand
- Access to market
- Return on investment
