Tumour Pathology 1 Flashcards
1
Q
What is a tumour (or neoplasm)?
A
- an abnormal growing mass of tissue
- its growth is uncoordinated as it continues after the removal of any stimulus
- it is an irreversible change
2
Q
What are the two types of tumour?
A
- benign
- malignant (=cancer)
3
Q
What is cancer?
A
- a tumour which has the ability to metastasise (spread) and move to other areas of the body
4
Q
What is the major cause of death in the UK?
A
- cancer (breast, lung, prostate)
5
Q
What are the three commonest type of cancer for males?
A
- prostate
- lung
- colon
6
Q
What are the three commonest type of cancer for females?
A
- breast
- lung
- colon
7
Q
Which cancer has the highest survival rate?
A
- melanoma (90%)
8
Q
How do you class tumours?
A
- based on tissue of origin (epithelium, connective tissue, blood cells, lymphoid tissue, neural tissue, germ cells)
- benign/malignant
9
Q
What do you call a tumour on the CNS?
A
- astrocytoma
10
Q
What do you call a tumour on the PNS?
A
- schwannoma

Q
Characteristics of teratoma
A
- composed of various tissues
- develop in ovary/testis
- ovarian teratomas usually benign
- testicular teratomas usually malignant
13
Q
What differentiates a benign and a malignant tumour?
A
- malignant are invasive, metastasise, poorly differentiated, loss of normal function and cause death
- benign are capsulated, none invasive, well-differentiated and function in a similar way to normal tissue
