Tumor Markers Flashcards
This is found in tissues and serves as marker for malignancies
Tumor Markers
Marker for epithelial tissue cells and used for diagnosis of carcinoma
Keratin
Malignancy that is epithelial in origin
Carcinoma
Malignancy that is connective tissue origin
Sarcoma
Can determine the site of tumor. Useful in detecting (breast) adenocarcinoma. (+) In Breast, lung, and Kidney cancer
Epithelial
Membrane
Antigen (EMA)
This is an oncofetal antigen
Carcinoembryonic
antigen (CEA)
This differentiates adenocarcinoma from mesothelioma
Carcinoembryonic
antigen (CEA)
CEA is elevated in cancers of?
Cancers of Gastrointestinal Tract
CEA is also used in monitoring of cancers in: (4)
Colon
Pancreas
Cervix
Breast cancer
Differentiates lung adenocarcinoma from
mesothelioma
Thyroid Transcription Factor 1 (TTF-1)
Found in thyroid neoplasm/ cancer
Thyroid Transcription Factor 1 (TTF-1)
Highly specific antigen for prostate
Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA)
PSA is eleveted in? (4)
- Prostate cancer
- Pancreatic cancer
- Salivary tumors
- Prostate infection
Normally found in breast epithelial cells, but
not in myoepithelial cells
Estrogen-Progesterone
Receptor (ER/PR)
Purpose of ER/PR: (2)
- Very useful in determining prognosis and treatment of breast cancer/ carcinoma and identification of metastatic breast carcinoma
- Determination of prognosis is useful especially
when the px is undergoing chemotherapy
