Tulvings LTM Flashcards
1
Q
Why does Tulving critisize MSM?
A
- MSM shows LTM is one unified store
- This isn’t the case LTM crtisize its have three LTM memories
- Procedural memory - how you do things e.g. riding a bike , writing , doing it unconsiously
- Declaratice memory containing two types Semantic and Episodic
- Semantic memory is general factual information e.g. PARIS is France
- Episodic memory is personal experiences, which is time-stapped and ‘autobiolograhy’ e.g. a wedding remembering every detail
2
Q
Which memory is more vunerable to distortion + forgetting?
A
- Episodic memory is more vunerable to distortion + forgetting
- therefore it’s affect first in Alzheimers (type of dementia) due to early damage in the hippocampus
3
Q
Why patient HM have supporting evidence for LTM?
A
- Paitent HM had difficulty remembering events from his previous past/event e.g. stroking a dog
- but didn’t need psychologist to know the concept of a dog explained to him
- stroking a dog was his impaired damage to episodic memory
- knowing concept of the dog knew his semantic memory was intact
- shows there’s seperate LTM memory affected
4
Q
Why Patient HM is a weakness for LTM?
A
- HM was able to improve accuracy on mirror tracking trace of a star but doesn’t remember doing it
- procedural memory was intact because his improved
- no explanation on how he forgot or how exaclty LTM works
- only describes that there are three LTM memory
CASE STUDY weakness
- unique patients
- patient HM had epilepsy
- one participant = small sample
5
Q
How does Tulving LTM is applicable to real life?
A
- participant with mild memory impairment did episodic training to improve
- this was compared with the control group
- participants with mild memory impairement did better in the episodic test than control group
- shows there’s three differnt LTM
- able to improve seperate LTM and help individuals improve their memory leading to more normal lives as they grow old in episodic memory
