Q

What are the features of Sensory Register?

A
  • all stimuli from environment including 5 sense pass into the sensory register
  • duration last a fraction of a second
  • very little that pass into the sensory register passes further to the STM unless you pay ATTENTION

Q

What are the features of STM in MSM?

A
  • limited capacity of 7 plus or minus
  • encodes acoustically
  • Baddeley notice any mistaken words recalled are due to acoustic encoding e.g. any word that sound the same the list may contain bare but accidentaly recalled stare
  • duration is between 18 - 30 seconds

Q

How can duration of STM be extended?

A
  • Duration is 18-30 seconds but maintining rehearsal will retain it long enough in STM
  • practicing this rehearsal will also pass into LTM

Q

How does the MSM have application to society?

A
  • application to society to improve memory
  • limited capacity of STM can be extended by ‘chunking’
  • can be used for students when learning and recalling lengthy concepts

Q

How does patient HM support the MSM?

A
  • Patient HM memory explains the MSM
  • STM was intact but LTM was damanged
  • demonstrates STM and LTM stores are seperate/independent to each other

Q

How is MSM good for psychological methods and psychology developing over time?

A
  • MSM was useful in it’s time but some aspects were not supported
  • MSM changed process of memory e.g. development and improve of the STM
  • combine the old (MSM) with newer (WMM) together to have a deeper understanding of behaviour

Q

How does Patient KF weakens the MSM?

A
  • Patient KF got into a motor cycle accident
  • Struggled with verbal information but his visual information was intact
  • Shows there’s different stores in STM, not just one unit storage system
  • Supports the imporved WMM of STM having 3 limited capacity stores

Q

What brain scanning techniques was used and how they backed up the MSM?

A
  • used MRI scans to show parts of the brain
  • Shows hippocampus is active when using your LTM
  • Shows prefrontal lobes is active when using STM
  • They back up the existence of different stores for different memories

Q

Why being reductionist is a weakness of the study?

A
  • reductionist simply very complex phenomenon and reducing it down to simple concepts
  • more complex than just three stores in reality
  • Against the phenomenon why patient KF verbal information was damanged but visual information was intact

Q

Why does Miller Magic 7 plus or minus support the MSM?

A
  • found that STM struggles to hold more than 9 items
  • WMM or STM contains a temporary store holding a limiting capacity
  • able to hold certain amount of infomation before decay occurs

Q

Weaknesses of MSM?

A
  • Reductionist
  • Contradicts studies e.g. WMM which also supports patient KF
