What is usurpation?
To illegally seize the throne from another monarch
What is royal legitimacy?
The idea that the monarch is the rightful one due to their family links
What is a dynasty?
Generations of the same royal family
What is consolidation?
To ensure the new monarchs power + authority is accepted by others
What is the court of requests?
Part of them royal council that dealt with individual requests from ordinary people
What is council learned in law?
Deals with problems concerning royal lands + rights, particularly important when dealing with enforcing bonds + recognisers
What is retaining?
Employing + maintaining servants
What are over mighty subjects?
Nobility who tried to use their power against their king as a way to bring more power + authority to themselves
What is the court of general surveyors?
Checks the revenue coming in from crown lands
What is a bond?
Written agreements where a noble who had offended paid for the offence as a security for future good behaviour
What is a recognisance?
Formal acknowledgement of the debt
What was the wars of the roses?
A civil war in England between the Lancastrian’s + the Yorkists between 1437 + 1487
What is bastard feudalism?
Rather than grant land, the nobles begun to pay annuities to their knights in order o stain service + eventually join the nobles private army when needed
What is a pretender?
Somone who pretends to have a claim to the throne in order to overthrow the monarch
What is a fiefdom?
A semi-independant area
