President’s Committee on Civil Rights
-A special government set up to investigate the status of civil rights across the country
-The committee was to thoroughly investigate what rights African Americans were denied, especially in Southern States
Truman urges congress to pass ‘To secure these rights’
-Urged congress to act on the report made by the PCCR (which was considered highly controversial at the time)
-Truman took on his own party and Congress to make it clear that the President supported the Civil Rights movement
Executive Order 9981
-July 26 1948
-Abolished racial discrimination in the United States Armed forces and eventually led to the end of segregation in the military
