Tropical Rainforests Flashcards
Describe the distribution of tropical rainforests
- location due to latitude
- location due to continents
- Astride the equator and mostly located within the tropics ( I.e. Between the Tropic of Cancer (23.5’ north) and the Tropic of Capricorn (23.5’ South))
- Mainly found in South America, Central Africa and the islands of South-East Asia/North Autrilasia such as Indonesia
What is the climate of tropical rainforests in terms of temperature
Temperatures are hot throughout the year (around 27’C), resulting in a small annual range of temperature
Climate of tropical rainforests in terms of precipitation
Rainfall occurs most days, with a minimum of 40-50mm per month, and usually a minimum of around 2000 mm per year
Why are temperatures warm all year round
High temperatures result from the suns rays being penetrated on a smaller area of the earths surface, meaning temperatures are hotter than in areas nearer to the poles where the heat energy received from the sun becomes spread over larger areas
What type of rainfall occurs
Convectional rainfall
What do the high temperatures and precipitation amounts causes
High humidity
