Rainforest Adaptations Flashcards
What are drips tips
Leaves have waxy surface with pointed tips at the end to enable excess rainwater to run-off easily.
What is good about drip tips
Prevents growth of algae
If this grows it would block out sunlight and reduce ability of photosynthesis
What are buttress roots
Roots that are very shallow
Stabilise tall trees
Why are buttress roots adapted
Soils are thin so shallow roots are needed to soak up nutrients
Massive strong roots need to stabalise trees that in the canopy layer are over 30m tall
What are epiphytes
Plants that live on other trees mainly on trunks and branches
Why and how are epiphytes adapted
Grow on other large trees to reach sunlight in canopy layer to allow photosynthesis
