What is malaria what causes it?
Protozoa Plasmodium by female anopheles
falciparum most fatal
Signs and symptoms of Malaria?
onset 7-10 days jaundice anaemia fever flu-like symptoms thrombocytopenia
Investigations for malaria?
3 thick and thin blood films
malaria rapid antigen detection tests
Management for malaria?
prevention: antimalarials, nets and repellent
Medical emergency - NOTIFY PUBLIC HEALTH ENGLAND
treatment -
non falciparum - chloroquinine
falciparum - quinine
What is typhoid fever?
faeco-oral transmission
salmonella typhi or paratyphoid
Signs and symptoms of typhoid fever?
fever + bradycardia splenomegaly cough malaise, myalgia headache anorexia GI symptoms
Investigations for typhoid fever?
blood culture
FBC, LFTs, stool culture
Management for Typhoid fever?
IV ceftriaxone
PO azithromycin
What is dengue fever?
mosquito borne tropical disease usually from SE Asia or South Africa
3-14 days after infection.
Symptoms for dengue fever?
high fever, headache, vomiting, muscle and joint pains, skin rash
severe - low WCC, low platelets, haemorrhage
What is dengue haemorrhage fever?
Occurs upon second infection of a different strain
- capillary leak, hypotension, haemorrhage
Investigations for Dengue fever?
PCR viral antigen
FBC, LFTs, Serum Albumin
Management for dengue fever?
Supportive - fluids and monitoring
