What is a food allergy?
Primary - failed to develop immune tolerance
Infant - milk, egg, peanut
Older children - peanut, fish, shellfish
Secondary - initially tolerated then allergic
Signs and symptoms of food allergy?
IgE mediated allergy - urticaria, facial swelling, rash, erhythema, nausea
Non-IgE mediated - erythema, atopic eczema, GORD change in bowel habits.
Investigations for food allergy?
Clinical History
-speed on onset, severity, location,
food diary
atopic history
skin prick allergy testing
measurement of IgE antibodies
Management of food allergy?
Specialist care
avoid foods
teach how to manage allergic attack
What is allergic rhinitis?
intermittent vs persistent
mild vs severe
seasonal vs perennial
Signs and symptoms of allergic rhinitis?
investigations?
coryza, conjunctivitis, blocked nose
sleep disturbance
identify co-existent asthma
Management of allergic rhinitis?
2-5 years = oral antihistamine
inhaled corticosteroids
What is the cow’s milk protein allergy?
Symptoms?
Common 3-6%
can be immediate or delayed
infants that are breastfed can still get it
IgE mediated allergy - same as food allergy
Non-IgE mediated - same as food allergy
Management of cow’s milk allergy?
Eliminate cow’s milk
monitor growth
re-evaluate tolerance to protein
