Mystery of faith-an acknowledgement Jesus’ sacrifice is made present by the consecration
Triune beliefs
There is one God . “Lord alone” however in that one God there are 3 persons united working in harmony
Jesus’ baptism
When Jesus rose from the waters he saw a dove approach him . This represents the spirit that unites the father and the son in love
A voice from the clouds then say “this is my son the beloved”
This is the father proclaiming his love for the son
Galatians attempts to aid our understanding of the triune
We are the brothers and sisters of Jesus .
The father pours the holy spirit out into creation
The holy spirit unites all of creation
Nicene creed on the triune
God the father- creator of all things .”father almighty creator of heaven and earth
God the son-the son was sent down to act the ultimate sacrifice freeing all of humanity .”suffered death and was buried.
However God the son is equal to the father “consubstantial with the father “
God the spirit-gives life . “Lord the giver of life”
Comes from both the father and son . “Who proceeds from the father and the son”
What does Genesis tell us about the trinity
The word was with God at the beginning . Jesus is the word made flesh therefore he is eternal
“God created the heavens” referring to the father as the creator”
“Wind from God” refers to the spirit telling us that the spirit was there at the creation
How does belief in the triune influence christians
The holy spirit is the love of the father and the son . Because we believe that the holy spirit and therefore love pours into our hearts . This means we must show love to others
Mission and evangelism
Mission-Acting instead of simoly praying for something to occur . Such as taking part in fundraisers for good causes
Evangelism- going out and spreading the word of the lord
Matthew and Jesus’ baptism
He writes that the members of the triune were there . Not only does this confirm that there are 3 persons but it also emphasises Jesus ‘ importance
St Augustine and love
Bible stated that “God is love “
Love cannot exists on its own therefore there are 3 persons to give and receive love
The trinity is the person who loves , the one that is loved and the love that unites the 2
The holy spirit is the love that unites the father and the son . The spirit pours out into all creation to unite all people
Catherine la cugna and love
The son is continually from the father
The holy spirit is the love that unites them
The act of the father begetting the son pours love outward to creation
The son came to earth to redeem humans , he came from the father to share the fathers love
The holy spirit guides believers towards the father to complete the work of Jesus
Once redemption has been complete all things will be brought back to God
The authority of the magisterium
The apostles would go round to different areas appointing someone in each to spread the word . Eventually these people would be known as bishops.
Since Peters death there has been an unbroken succession of popes . The pope and bishops form the magisterium as they are descendants of Jesus’ closest friends
Council of nicea
Teachings that only God was eternal was being spread. The catholic church had to fix this misconception
They concluded that the son is eternally begotten by the father
They are both equal and of the same nature
Both coexists
