Churches before and after 65

A

Before-churches would face towards Jeurusalem

The building was shaped like a cross to remid us of Jesus

Mass was spoken in latin despite the native language and the priest had their back to the congregation. Those who were present did not feel involved in the mass

After-built to ensure that many people could see what was going on . The alter was built in the centre of the church or a place more accessible to the congregation to make them feel more involved

Q

Free will and sin

A

God made all of creation perfect . He gave us free will. God wants us all to choose him instead of force us .

Humans can use their free will in anyway they want . Christians use their free will to please God but we all make mistakes .

Sin separates us from God . We were all built with tendency to commit sin (original sin )

That is why he sent his son down to repair the relationship and beat sin and death

Q

Salvation

A

Past- People believed that once Jesus rose he had finally brought salvation and nothing else is needed to save humanity

Present- many believe that salvation is ongoing . Whilst Jesus defeated the ultimate power of sin doesn’t mean it stops existing . People still have to accept God and therefore achieve salvation for themselves.

Future-when the kingdom of God is fully established at the end of time sim and death will have finished . All who accepted God will be able to enjoy freedom in heaven . This is the final victory of Gods grace

Tree of the cross

A

St Irenaus sees the cross as the ending of the Genesis story (kinda)

Adam and Eve took from the tree of knowledge disobeying God

To fix this Jesus obeyed God and sacrificed himself paying the price of that sin.

Q

Conscience

A

It is Gods voice speaking in the heart of the person guiding them to the correct path

“There he is alone with God”

17
Q

Sides to conscience

A

Natural-we are taught that all humans are born with the understanding of right and wrong helping us to choose Good from Evil

However conscience must be educated and developed . We must pay attention to christian teachings so that we can be in full contact with God. We know this as humans can only make the right decision when they have all the information

“Reason should not be set in opposition to the moral law of the magisterium”

18
Q

Events of mass

A

Start-catholics come together to share in the sacrifice of Christ

Readings-reminds us that God has guided people throughout history

Offertory-a sign of gratitude to God

Consecration-pinnacle of mass . The bread becomes Jesus . The command “do this in memory of me “ is fulfilled every time showing our obedience to God

End of mass-we leave to go out and spread the word of God

19
Q

Mass is the source and summit

A

The offering of christ is the highest form of prayer for a christian . We re-enact this every time

It is the source as all who go are filled with Jesus through the communion

20
Q

Different understandings of the Eucharist

A

Orthodox- the ceremony takes place behind a screen separating the congregation due to it’s holiness

Anglican-christ becomes the the bread and wine . Meaning he is present in the community when they attend church

Quakers-eucharist is not celebrated , they believe christ is present anyway and inspires the prayers

Nonconformists-the eucharist is a memorial of the last supper . Christ is only present in particular readings

21
Q

Words of institution

A

When these words are said they become the body and blood

By eating the body the people share in its redeeming effects

22
Q

Agnus Dei

A

The prayer shortly after communion referring to the Jews escape from Egypt.
This tells us that Christ is the new lamb sacrificed to God for all our sakes
“Lamb of God you take away the sins of the world”

23
Q

Benediction

A

Where the consecration is put on display so that all peoples can show their respects

24
Q

Eucharistic adoration

A

The people praise the body and blood as it is Jesus meaning it must be tested with reverence and respect
