Book of Psalms
This is a book in the old testament containing pieces of poetry that are sometimes set to music
Divine office
A collection of psalms and readings that every priest, monk and nun has to say at least four times a day
Plainchant
An ancient form of song, usually unaccompanied, which uses a limited range of notes
Contemporary worship music
Religious songs that have been written recently for the praise of God, often using modern instruments
Mass settings
Music that enables people to sing certain parts of the mass
Alleluia
Is a hebrew word for ‘praise God’.
It is sung at easter vigil( the ressurection of Jesus) this is because it is a song of joy and triumph
Should not be sung at lent as is a period of sorrow and death
Gloria
It is a hymn of praise about God’s glory and goodness.
It is sung early in the mass
It is a more complex song to try and convey how thankful we truely are
Eucharistic acclamations
The parts of the mass which are important: The Gloria The Alleluia The Sanctus The mystery of Faith
Holy, Holy(sanctus)
Sanctus is the latin word for holy
The three-fold repitition of holy shows how God is completely holy
The sanctus can be sung reflectively to show the peace and harmoney of heaven
It can also be sung as a hymn of praise
Mystery of Faith(memorial acclamation)
Immediately after the consecration people acclaim the mystery of faith, in doing so we preclaim that we accept that the conscration(holy communion) represents the saving of Jesus
Lord have mercy(kyrie)
Is a short prayer that is important christian worship
Lamb of God(agnus Dei)
Lamb of God is a title for Jesus that appears in the Gospel of John. It appears at John 1:29, where John the Baptist sees Jesus and exclaims, “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.”
Great Amen
Grace is the unconditional love of God for everyone, regardless of whether or not they have obeyed his will.
Triune of God
Within the one God there is a three-ness.
With in the one person there are three parts of him. The state or quality of being three in number. About the three parts together.
Trinity
The belief that there are three persons in one God; the father, the son and the holy spirit are separate, but also on being. God is made up of three parts. More about the separate parts.
Shema
This is a Jewish prayer affirming belief in the one God found in the Torah
Baptism of Jesus
God asks to be Baptised by John. John trys to dismiss this by saying that Jesus is to good to be baptised by him. “I need to be baptised by you, and do you come to me?”.
Nicene Creed(beliefs)
This is the statment of faith towards God and can be put into three main parts God the father, God the son, holy spirit.
Begotten not Made
This means that He had a beginning as any other son would have a beginning. This means that He was conceived by a father (Mat. 1:20) - the Father Himself. Not only was Jesus Christ “begotten of the Father” (John 1:14), He was also the physical manifestation (“eikon”) of that Father
Consubstantial
Literally ‘of one being’, showing that the Father, Son and Spirit are not separate entities but one God
Spoken through the prophets
Prophets are messangers so God tells the messangers what to tell us.
Mission
This is the sending out people with a job or function to perform
Evangelism
Preaching thr good news about Jesus to other people
St Augustine of Hippo(Trinity)
“If you see charity(love), you see the trinity
Catherine LaCugna(Trinity)
Famous for re-examining Christian understanding of the trinity. She claimed that for too long people had focused on the inner life and nature of the Godhead. For LaCugna, everything that can be known about God is based on God’s self-relevation. It is only possible to experience and understand what God is through his actions in peoples life
Apostolic Authority
The authority of the apostles, as the leaders of the early chruch, that is passed on to the bishops
Magisterial teachings
The decisions of the magisterium that should be accepted by catholics
Baptism
This is the sacrament in which a person becomes a child of God and a Christian.
Total immersion
This is to symbolise when Jesus died and was then resurected and when Jesus did this he the forgave us our sins
Sign of initiation
An action to show that a person has become a formal member of the Church
Prayer
It is a conversation between a person and God
The highest form of prayer is Jesus offering himself to the father on the cross
Prayer tends to be inspired by the holy spirit
Traditional prayer
They have got set words that have been used by generations of believers. Some people prefer them because the familiar words help them to open up to the presence of God
Spontaneous prayer
They are made up in the moment. Some people prefer them because they feel more personal and sincere way of communicating with God
Prayer postures
They are postures that can help assist prayer and help to show the intention behind the prayer
Kneeling
A sign of humility
Shows the person acknowledges God’ authority and submits to his will
A position asking for forgiveness
Genuflecting
A sign of respect
Catholics may genuflect when they enter the church or pass the tabernacle, to acknowledge Christ’s presence
Prostration
A sign of total humility and submission to God
A position pleading for help and mercy
Shows the person has given themselves up to God
Bowing
A sign of respect
A sign of praise to God
Acknowledges that God is great
