What is Bar Mitzvah?
Celebration of a boy reaching the age of ‘adulthood’, at the age of 13.
What is Bat Mitzvah?
Celebration of a girl reaching the age of ‘adulthood’, at the age of 12.
What is a Mitzvah?
Basically the ‘confirmation’ for Jews.
What is a Brit Milah?
Ceremony of a boy circumcising as a result of becoming a member of that Jewish Community.
What is the Pesach?
Festival celebrating the Jews’ escape from Egypt.
What is Rosh Hashanah?
Celebrating the Jewish New Year recalling the Genesis creation story.
What is Shabbat?
The Jewish holy day celebrated weekly which begins at sunset on Friday and continues to nightfall on Saturday.
What is Yom Kippur?
A day of penitence and fasting.
What is a Synagogue?
Place of worship for Jews.

Set of laws (613).
What is the Bimah?
Reading platform where to Torah is read.

Jews donate 10% of their income to Charity.
What are the Jewish Sacred Writings?
The Tanakh and the Talmud
What is the Tenakh?
The written Law containing the Torah, hevi’im, Ketuvim.
What is the Talmud?
The oral law containing Mishnah and Gemara.
What is Aninut?
Death to burial.
What is Kriah?
The tearing of the cloth of the deceased individual.
What is Shiva?
Intense period of mourning (7Days).
What is Shloshim?
First 30 days of mourning.
What is Aveilut?
Mourning part for children of the deceased, lasts for a year.
What is the Kaddish?
Prayer for peace.
What is Yizkor?
Rememberance services that take place 4 times a year in a synagogue.
What is Yahrzeit?
Anniversary when mourners say the Kaddish.
What is Hanukkah?
Jewish winter festival, annual festival which begins in December although the date changes yearly as the Jewish calendar differs from ours.
What is the New year for Jews?
New year is a time of judgement when many Jews repent about being sorry but also they atone which is to make-up for something they’ve done wrong.
What is the ark?
Holiest place in the synagogue as it contains the Torah.
What is the Bimah?
Reading platform where the Torah is read.
What is the Ner Tamid?
A light that is kept on at all times which symbolises God’s presence and was not put out.
What is the Star of David?
Symbol of Jews.

Seven branched candle which is lit every night in the temple of Jerusalem.
What do Oxthadox Jews recite in their services?
- In Hebrew.
- Rabbi facing towards torah with congregation.
- No instruments singing.
- Separate gender congregation.
What do Reformed Jews recite in their services?
- Congregation mixed.
- Rabbi faces congregation.

How do families prepare for shabbat?
- House cleaned

What is Mourning?
A period of time spent remembering the dead person.
What is Shiva?
An intense period of mourning that lasts for seven days.

A prayer said by Jewish mourning that praises God and asks for peace.

The dead are usually buried within 24hrs of their death.

A period of time, traditionally 12 months before the wedding ceremony, when the couple are engaged or promised to each other.

Signed in the presence of witnesses, then read out loud and given to the bride.
What is Marriage in Judaism?
Seven wedding blessings created. Rabbi makes a short speech and blesses rhe couple in front of the congregation.
What is the significance of the breaking of the glass during marriage?
It symbolises the regret for the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem.
