Trigger 3: Hypertension Flashcards
high BP affects
1.13 billion people
how many death caused by high BP (e.g. stroke)
one in eight
hypertensio def
sustained elevation of BP
clinical def
systolic BP >140mmHg
diastolic BP> 90
BP measurement
- doctor wraps cuff around your arm
- the cuff has a gauge which reads blood pressure
- doctor then inflates the cuff to squeeze your arm
- after the cuff is inflated, the doctor slowly lets air out
- ## whilst doing this they will listen to your pulse with a stethoscope and watch the gauge
what scale does the gauge use
mmHg- to measure BP in your blood vessels
systolic
measures the pressure in your blood vessel when your hear beats
diastolic
measures the pressure in your blood vessels when your hear rests between beats
normal bp
<120/ <80
pre hypertension
<120-139/,80-89
stage 2 hypertension
> 160 />100
SBP is a
more important risk factor than DBP
environmental risk factors for hypertension
smoking, diet and stress
genetic factors environmental risk factors for hypertension
mitochondrial genome and nucelar genome (e.g. kidney and RAAS gene variants)
