Tricuspid Disease Flashcards
What are the leaflets of the TV?
anterior, septal, posterior
What is the narrowing of the TV orifice?
TVS
What is the most common cause of TV stenosis?
rheumatic fever
What are some other causes of TV stenosis?
congenital TS, carcinoid heart disease, RA clot/tumor
What are the signs and symptoms of TS?
murmurs, peripheral edema, abdominal swelling, JVD, dyspnea, fatigue
What does TS look like on U/S?
thickened/calcified TV leaflets, RAE, turbulent flow, dilated IVC
What are the treatment options for TS?
valvular angioplasty and valve replacement
What is the backflow of blood from the RV back into the RA during systole?
Tricuspid regurgitation
What percent of patients have trace/mild TR?
80-90%
What is functional TR?
a secondary problem, TV structure is normal
When does functional TR occur?
after a heart attack
What are causes of functional TR?
high pulmonary pressures, right heart pathological conditions, pacemaker wires, catheters
What is anatomic TR?
a primary problem, abnormal TV
What are the causes of anatomic TR?
rheumatic heart disease, prolapse, ruptured chordae tendinae, papillary muscle dysfunction
What are the signs and symptoms of TR?
weakness, fatigue, hepatomegaly, ascites, JVD, peripheral edema, CHF, dyspnea, orthopnea, pulmonary edema
What are the complication of TR?
RAE, RVE, A-Fib
What is TV infection aka?
vegetation
What is the most common cause of TV infection?
IV drug use
What are the other causes of TV infection?
alcohol abuse, skin infections, infected venous catheters
What is the 2D finding of TV infections?
irregular masses attached to leaflets
What is a congenital deformity that results in a downward displacement of the TV in the RV?
ebstein’s anomaly
What is the 2D finding of ebstein’s anomaly?
abnormal leaflets, huge RA, RV is ‘atrialized’
What is it called when cancerous tumors of the GI/appendix/ileum secrete substances that damage the right heart and valves?
carcinoid syndrome
What are the signs and symptoms of carcinoid syndrome?
permanent flushing of skin, wheezing, diarrhea, right heart endocardial lesions
What is it called when there is a congenital absence of the TV?
tricuspid atresia
