What are the main signs/symptoms of trichomoniasis in women?
Vaginal discharge
* Yellow/green
* Profuse and frothy
* Offensive smelling
Vulval irritation
Dyspareunia
What findings on physical examination are suggestive of trichomoniasis
Strawberry cervix
N.B. In most cases examination is normal
What signs/symptoms tend to present in males with trichomoniasis?
In men usually assymptomatic however may have urethritis
What differentials should be considered alongside trichomoniasis vaginalis?
Vulvovaginal candidiasis
* Thick cottage-cheese like discharge
Bacterial vaginosis
* Fishy smelling, greyish white discharge
Gnorrhoea and chlamydia
What findings on microscopy are suggestive of trichomoniasis vaginalis?
Motile trophozoites
What investigations should be considered in patients suspected of trichomoniasis vaginalis?
Microscopy of wet-mount
STD screen
What is the management plan for patients with trichomoniasis vaginalis?
Medicine:
Oral metronidazole (400-500mg) twice daily for 5-7 days OR one-off 2g dose.
Conservative:
Contact tracing
Advise to abstain from sex for at least one week until they and partners have been succesfully treated
