Triangles of the Neck Flashcards
Describe the boundaries and contents of the anterior triangle?
The anterior triangle consists of the inferior border of the mandible, the medial border of the sternocleidomastoid and an imaginary line in the saggital plane through the middle of the body.
It contains many muscles,
It contains 8 hyoid muscles. And the hyoid bone. The pharynx, thyroid and parathyroid glands can be found within a further division called the muscular triangle.
Describe the posterior triangle?
The posterior triangle consists of the lateral border of the scm, the anterior border of the trapezius and the middle third of the clavicle.
Covered by fascia and floor is formed by prevertebral fascia.
Within you have the omohyoid muscle split into two bellies via a tendon.
The floor is made up of all the scalenes muscles, levator scapulae and splenius capitis.
In the anterior triangle list some contents and structures that pass through
The common carotid artery passes through and bifurcates into the external and internal carotid arteries, It also contains the internal jugular vein which drains the head and neck.,
Cranial nerves that pass through or give innervation to muscles within the triangle are XI, VII, X, XII, XI.
Muscles in regard to Hyoid bone? (anterior)
Supra: Mylohoyoid Stylohyoid, digastric. Geniohyoid
Infra: Omohyoid, Sternohyoid, thyrohyoid, sternothyroid
Name structures that pass through the Post. triangle
The external jugular vein lies superficialy, crossing the scm the vein pierces the fascia and empties into the subclavian vein,
Other veins include the sublcavian, transverse and suprascapular veins accompanied by their arteries.
The distal part of the subclavian artery emerges between the anterior and middle scalenes. It becomes the axillary artery as it crosses the first rib.
Nerves such as the XI nerve enters the triangle innervating SCM.
The cervical plexus , brachial plexus and therefore the phrenic nerve also innervate or pass through the triangle.
Name three triangles contained in the anterior triangle.
carotid triangle
submental triangle,
sub mandibular triangle
