A

Nostrils – seperated by the septum
made mostly of cartilage/. They shrink and engorge under the nasal cycle.

2 internal and 2 external. Olfactory nerve I Is responsible for relaying sensory information.

Give a brief overview of the anatomy of the Olfactory nerve

(CN I).

A

Sensory nerve for smells
Does not join with brain stem- unmyelinated and has meningeal covering.

2 processes – peripheral olfactory process (receptors in the olfactory mucosa.

Central process – returns information to brain through the cribiform plate of ethmoid bone

Olfactory bulb receives fibers and transmits to the olfactory tract
Afferent fibers of olfactory receptor neurons transmit nerve impulses about odors to the central nervous system .
Derived from the nasal placode.

List the contents of the carotid sheath.

A

common carotid artery, internal carotid artery, medial internal jugular vein – lateral the vagus nerve, the deep cervical lymph nodes.

Upper part contains CN IX, XI, XII which pierce it’s fascia.

Ansa cervicalis is embedded in it’s anterior wall.
