Meninges Flashcards
Describe Dura mater
The dura mater has two layers, an edosteal layer near the skullcap and a meningeal layer close to the brain.
It has large blood vessels that go into the pia mater.
Envelopes the arachnoid mater and surrounds and supports the large dural sinuses carrying blood towards the brain.
Describe Arachnoid mater
Arachnoid mater contains the CNS, covered by flat cells and impermeable to fluid.
Appears as a loosely fitting sac.
Has large numbers of filaments called arachnoid trabeculae pass through the sub arachnoid space to blend with the pia mater.
It is composed of an outer tightly packed cell portion called the arachnoid cell barrier layer forming a barrier.
Describe Pia mater
Firmly adheres the brain and spinal cord
follows brains contours
Very thin – comprised of fibrous tissue covered by sheet of flat cells
Nourishes the brain via capillaries
Pierced by blood vessels to the brain and spinal cord
