Triangles of the Neck Flashcards
What structure divides the neck into the anterior and posterior triangles?
The Sternocleidomastoid muscle
What are the boarders of the posterior triangle?
Anterior- posterior boarder of the SCM
Posterior- Anterior boarder of the Trapezius
Inferior- superior boarder of the middle 1/3 of the clavicle
What are the boarders of the anterior triangle?
Superior- inferior boarder of the mandible
Anterior- The anterior mid line
Posterior- anterior boarder of the SCM
Where does the apex of the anterior triangle sit?
inferiority, at the jugular notch
what forms the roof of the anterior triangle?
- the investing layer of the deep cervical fascia
- the superficial cervical fasia
- the Platysma
What are the four subdivisions of the anterior triangle?
1) Submental triangle
2) Submandibular (Diagastric) Triangle
3) Carotid Triangle
4) Muscular Triangle
Which of the anterior triangle subdivisions is unpaired?
Submental Trianlge
The boundaries of the submental triangle…
1) L/R anterior bellies of the digastric muscles
2) the body of the hyoid bone
The floor of the submental triangle…
the mylohyoid muscle
what are the contents of the submental triangle?
minor vessels and some lymph nodes
what is one clinical aspect of the submental triangle?
the lymph nodes contained here will become swollen with tongue or lip cancer.
What are the boundaries of the submandibular triangle?
1) inferior boarder of the mandible
2) the anterior belly of hte digastric
3) posterior belly of the digastric
What makes up the floor of the submandibular trianlge
the myohyoid and hypoglossus muslces
what are the contents of the submandibular triangle?
1) submandibular salivary gland
2) internal carotid artery
3) facial artery
4) internal jugular vein
5) glossopharngeal nerve (CN IX)
6) vagus nerve (CN X)
What is one major clinical aspect/consideration with the submandibular trianlge?
use caution when palpating or adjusting with contacts in this area due to the importance of the neurovascualr contents
