Star Chamber sentenced three Puritan writers (Bastwick, Burton and Prynne) who had published attacks on the government, to have their ears cut off and be branded on the cheeks before being imprisoned at the king’s pleasure.

Consequence
The defendants became notorious.
The sentence had been imposed by Laud- emphasised the increasing influence of Laudian bishops in the government of the state as well as the Church.
Presence of clergymen in government was also evident in the appointment of William Juxon, Bishop of London, to the post of Lord Treasurer in 1636
