Summary
Both Charles and the Covenanters raised armies, but Charles, lacking money, had to rely on the country militias from England- 18,000 conscripts vs 20,000 men from Scottish Army.
Accepting defeat, Charles signed the Treaty of Berwick, ending what became known as the First Bishops War.

Consequence
Charles provoked a war which he could not sustain. Weakened his grip on government and demonstrated an inability to understand the impact of his decisions in three kingdoms (was crowned in Scotland in 1633).

Significance
If Charles had ever formed a conscious intention to establish an absolute monarchy, his decision to extend his programme of reform to Scotland ensured his failure.
