Summary

A

On the day of adjournment, a group of MPs led by Denzil Holles and Sir John Eliot demanded the passing of three formal resolutions against:

  • The growth of Arminianism
  • The levying of Tonnage and Poundage
  • The actions of those who paid Tonnage and Poundage

When the Speaker refused to delay the adjournment, they held him in his chair until the resolutions passed

A

Charles ordered Parl. to adjourn when they looked into breaches of the Petition of Right and Charles’ treatment of those who did not pay T + P.

Consequence

A

Parliament now retaliating directly against Charles actions which could be argued were purposefully fuelled.

Led to Charles embarking on Personal Rule for 11 yrs.

Parliamentary opponents imprisoned:

  • John Eliot (one of the group of MPs who forced through three resolutions) died in the Tower of London in 1632.
