Triacylglycerols Flashcards
How is triacylgelycerols or triacylglyceride formed?
Each alcohol group of glycerol forms an ester linkage with a fatty acid to form TAG
Are TAGs hydrophilic or hydrophobic?
Highly hydrophobic
How does the longer chain of saturated fatty acids affect the melting point?
The longer the chain, the higher the melting point
What does phosphorylation do molecules?
adds negative charges to molecules which increases its water solubility
What is phosphorylation?
Addition of phosphate group
Phosphoric acid + alcohol
phosphate ester
Phosphoric acid + acid
phosphoanhydride
What are glycerophospholipids or phosphoglycerides?
Phospholipids!!
In the membrane
What are the polar and non polar parts of a glycerophospholipids or phosphoglycerides?
Polar head and non polar tail
TAG
Glycerol - attached to 3 fatty acids
glycerophospholipids or phosphoglycerides
Glycerol-attached to 2 fatty acids and a PO4- alcohol
What are carbohydrates?
Sugar molecules
Abundant and used in energy metabolism
What are monosaccharides?
Single sugar unit
What are oligosaccharides?
Short chains of monosaccharide units
What are polysaccharides?
Polymers of 20 or more sugar units
