Trends Flashcards

Q

What are the environmental trends the occur due to globalisation?

A

-Scientific advances revealed major problems like oil spills, deforestation and global warming. Developed countries then pushed for international action. However at the same time, poorer countries started developing their economic and resource bases, and this led to a lack of environmental management.
-From the industrial revolutions until the 1980s, developed countries thought little of managing the environment, except from protecting national parks.
-World agreements/protocols have been led by the UN, but TNC operations and pressures of population growth/economic development in emerging/developing countries make global environmental management very difficult.

Q

What are the economic trends the occur due to globalisation?

A

-In the early stage of globalisation developed countries increased their economic wealth due to their more advanced industries/skilled workforces.
-The 1980s, global recession slowed economic growth in developed countries the most, allowing developing countries to catch up by establishing their own industries and participating in world trade.
-New transport and communication technologies from the 1990s boosted opportunities for emerging countries and their people. The economic trend in many developed countries became stagnation, even before the 2008 global recession.
