What was the Western Front?
Western front ran through France and Belgium from the Swiss border to the North Sea. (Western Europe)
What was the Eastern Front?
The Eastern front ran along Russia (Eastern Europe)
Battle of the Somme
1916- bloodiest war- 60,000 casualties in one day- over 1 million deaths after 4months
No mans land?
Muddy wasteland between the two lines of trenches
Trenches?
A series of open tunnels that were meant for soldiers to travel safely. They were miles long. The trenches had underground rooms which were shelter from shells and bombs (dugouts)
Barbed wire?
Used to defend trenches from opposing soldiers from no mans land.
Sandbags?
If a bullet were to come into the trenches and hit the sandbag it would stop immediately and wouldn’t go further. Also sandbags held up the trenches when it was really wet because trenches were made of mud
Duck boards
Placed on the ground to stop troops sinking in the mud
Periscope
Made in the 20th century and enabled soldiers to see over the top of the trenches without the risk of being shot.
Communication trench
Linked the front line trench to the reserve trenches
Reserve trenches
Soldiers went here to rest or to wait to go onto the front line
Trench foot?
Soldiers spent most of their time soaking wet and feet drenched in water. They got trench foot from this which causes the foot to swell up and rot away
