What did women do to men who stayed behind?
They placed a white feather in their hands in the street as a sign of cowardice. This shamed them for not doing their bit in the war
What did the government do?
Introduced a new law called ‘the Defence of the Realm act’ which meant they had the power to do whatever was necessary during war time. For example they could take over mines and railways, control newspapers and radios, limit drunken behaviour (watering down beer, closing pubs early)
What were rations
Rations were an equal share of food given to citizens of Britain because there was a shortage of food. This was because German submarines were sinking boats that brought our trade. This meant prices went up on food and so did tax because the government had to borrow money from the USA. Each family were given an equal amount of food each week including butter, meat and sugar
Posters?
Posters were issued showing people how to tell the difference between German and British aircraft. It would tell them to take shelter if it was an enemy aircraft.
Zeppelins
Zeppelins were German airships flew over British towns to bomb them. Over 557 people were killed because of this
