Q

What is the limitation of CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) as a treatment for depression? (appropriateness + cognitive work)

A

CBT is not an appropriate treatment. A patient would require good amounts of motivation + lots of cognitive work. This would prove unsuitable to patients who lack motivation and patients with learning disabilities

Q

What is the limitation of CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) as a treatment for depression? (effective + relapse rates)

A

CBT is not an effective treatment, when considering relapse rates. An analysis of 439 clients (in 2017) found that 42% of clients relapsed into depression within six months of ending CBT treatment and 58% relapsed within a year. This also shows CBT may not have strong long term effects

A

CBT is an effective treatment, with high levels of supportive evidence to prove its effectiveness. March et al (2009) compared CBT to antidepressant drugs and found that CBT on its own was just as effective as when used alongside the antidepressants.

It is not appropriate as it may require the patient to be quite motivated as they have to participate in social activities, making it not appropriate for all people.

Q

What is a limitation of behavioural action as a treatment of depression? (cause of depression)

A

This treatment is not effective as it does not address the causes of depression. It does not help patients to address their irrational thoughts. This makes it ineffective on reducing symptoms and leaves room for a higher chance of relapse rates
