People that are depressed may lack the energy to be socially active and this may lead to withdrawing from work and/or education
What is the description of the behavioural characteristic “disruption to sleep and eating”?
People who are depressed may suffer form insomnia or hypersomnia (increased need for sleep). The appetite may also increase or decrease
What is the description of the behavioural characteristic “aggression + self-harm”?
Depression may lead to being physically/verbally aggressive towards others + sometimes can lead to self-harm

People who are depressed will have a constant feeling of sadness and low mood
What is the description of the emotional characteristic “low self - esteem”?
People who are depressed have very low levels of self esteem, to the extent that some people hate themselves
What is the description of the emotional characteristic “anger”?
People who are depressed will show feelings of anger that can lead to aggressive behaviour towards other or to themselves (self-harm)

Individuals with poor concentration will experience consequences in their daily life, making it difficult to make decisions and complete tasks
What is the description of the cognitive characteristic “focusing on negative thoughts”?
People with depression are biased towards remembering and focusing on more negative thoughts and memories than positive/happy thoughts and memories
What is the description of the cognitive characteristic “absolutist thinking”?
People with depression interpret situations as either bad or good (black and white thinking)
