Describe the MAOI treatment of MOD?
[Falls under Biological].

A

-They are a class of antidepressants and are prescribed to boost mood and lower anxiety associated with depressive thoughts.
-MAOI’s work by inhibiting the activity of MAO enzymes.
-MAO enzymes are known to break down Serotonin, Norepinephrine and Dopamine hence lowering their levels in the brain.
-By inhibiting the activity of MAO enzyme MAOI’s hence increase brain Serotonin, Norepinephrine and Dopamine.
-However, they have severe or extreme side effects such as;
1. Withdrawal symptoms.
2. Nausea.
3. Constipation.
4. Insomnia.
-Withdrawal symptoms may occur when MAOI’s are used alongside other medication such as painkillers were patients get negative side effects like; High blood pressure and headaches.
