When should immunization occur in a splenectomy?

A

If elective; at least 2 (ideally 4-6) weeks prior to surgery
Prophylactic antibiotics post surgery
Emergency: immunize at least 2 weeks post surgery and when well
Prophylactic antibiotics to be started immediately
