Q

Muslim attitudes to the treatment of criminals

A

Some Muslims believe that criminals should be treated fairly and that punishments should aim at both performing the criminal and bringing in restorative justice

Both the Muslim prison chaplains Association and Muslim aid works with Muslims prisoners to achieve these needs.

Muslim countries with shari’ah justice systems have a somewhat different attitudes as they believe that criminals should be punished
according to the hadd punishments set out in the Qur’an.

Muslims believe that all people have equal rights although criminals deserve punishment for their crimes this may involve the removal of some of their human rights (for example freedom if they are put in prison) which would be fair treatment for the crimes committed

Q

Islam and the use of torture

A

All Muslims are opposed to the use of torture however, some non-Muslim interpret the shari’ah punishments such as flogging stoning or amputation as torture.

Some Muslims would say that it is permitted to torture criminals who are hiding secrets which will harm innocent people.

Q

Non religious attitudes to torture

A

Humanists believe that criminals should be treated justly and humanly as this helps to ensure that the innocent suspects are treated this way to.

Humanists have always been in favour of the human rights and are supporters of the United Nations declaration of human rights.

Some atheists think that convicted criminals should not be able to use human rights legislation for such things as stopping them from being deported as it was split them from their spouse and children or to allow them to vote was in prison.

These atheists are also likely to approve of government agencies using torture to prevent terrorist attacks.
