4 P’s of CBT

A
  • Predisposing Factors: those that put someone at risk of developing a mental health problem. Those include: genetics, life events, temperament
  • Precipitating Factors: specific events/triggers to the current problem
  • Perpetuating Factors: those that maintain the current problem once it has been established
  • Protective Factors: those factors that are strengths or reduce the severity of the problem

  • Intermediate beliefs/assumptions: these are if, then statements (I must do blank to achieve blank)
  • Core Beliefs: Statements about self or world. These are global, rigid, and overgeneralized

Stages of CBT Treatment

A
  • Stage 1: Psychoeducation (1-3 weeks)
  • Stage 2: Cognitive restructuring (4-12)
    • Behavioral activation, fear hierarchy, exposure therapy, identifying emotions
    • Homework
    • Can incorporate other treatment modalities (DBT skills, Mindfulness, ACT)
  • Stage 3: Termination and Relapse Prevention
    • Consolidation of learning, review progress, discuss possibility of booster sessions.
