Ethical Principles A-E

A

A. Beneficence and Nonmaleficence

  • Do no harm
  • Resolve conflicts in a responsible fashion avoiding/minimizing harm
  • Guard against personal, financial, social, organizational, or political factors that might lead to misuse of their influence
  • Aware of own mental and physical health and its effect on those they work with

B. Fidelity and Responsibility

  • Uphold professional standards of conduct
  • Consult w/, refer to, cooperate w/ other professionals to serve the best interest of those they work with
  • Contribute a portion of time for little/no compensation or personal advantage

C. Integrity

  • Promote accuracy, honesty, and truthfulness in science/teaching/practice
  • Do not cheat/steal/subterfuge/intentionally misrepresent self
  • If deception is ethically justifiable to minimize harm, consider need/consequences, consult

D. Justice

  • All persons are entitled to justice/fairness regarding access to and benefit from psychology
  • Exercise reasonable judgment, take precautions to ensure boundaries of competence

E. Respect for People’s Rights/Dignity

  • Respect for dignity and worth of all people and rights of individuals to privacy, confidentiality, and self-determination
  • Aware of safeguards necessary to protect rights/welfare of persons/communities
  • Aware of/respect cultural, individual, role differences (i.e., race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, language, religion)
  • Try to eliminate effect on their work of biased based on factors

5150

A

Times when a 5150 can be enacted

  • Client is in imminent danger to self
  • Client is in imminent danger to others
  • Client is gravely disabled
    • Means a condition in which a person, as a result of a mental health disorder, is unable to provide for his or her basic personal needs or food, clothing and shelter

  • When a client reports that they are in danger of harming themself

  • When there is knowledge of or observation or reasonable suspicion that a child or elder has been the victim of abuse or neglect.

  • Danger: if a client presents a danger to themself or others, a 5150 may be warranted. Assess means, intent, or plans for violence.
    • If harm to others and there is an identifiable victim, invoke Tarasoff and required to contact the victim to warn them about potential danger and call the police to initiate a 5150.
    • May be required to call CPS or APS if child/elder is being abused/neglected
  • Documentation: Thoroughly document what is happening throughout work with the client. This could include interactions or encounters with the client (therapy/assessment), supervision, legal matters, conversations with collateral contacts, or other providers.

4 Cs

  • Consent: Informing the client of student status and the fact of being supervised. Provide contact information for my supervisor. Provide psychoeducational about the nature and course of treatment. Risk and benefits of treatment, as well as potential alternatives. Inform client of any fees and policies for the clinic.
  • Confidentiality: Explain confidentiality and limits to confidentiality. Informing client that some information may be shared during supervision. Explain incidents where confidentiality would have to be broken (harm to self, others, or reasonable suspicion or learning of child/elder abuse).
  • Competence: Be mindful of limits to competence with clients presenting problem, demographic information, cultural background, and potential treatment interventions. Refer client to a more appropriate and competent resource if something is beyond my competency
  • Consultation: Seek appropriate consultation from supervisor, colleagues or specialists to ensure giving clients best, most evidence-based care
