What are the types of medicine administration
- Topical

What does topical mean and what do you do with it
- applying medication to the skin or mucous membrane
What does Oral mean and what do you do with it
medication that is taken through their mouth (pills, liquid)
What does Subcutaneous / Intramuscular mean and where do you adminstrate it
Intramuscular injection is usually the route of choice because it is dependable and gives rapid uptake of treatments.
The most common injection sites are the major breast muscles and the thigh muscles
What does Intravenous / Intraosseous mean and where do you adminstrate it
Adminster drusg through the veins
Avian veins tend to be fragile and damage easily.
Therefore catheterisation should be considered if frequent access is required.
What does Intraosseous mean and what does it do
Administration of medicine through bones
What records should be kept?
- When the symptoms first appeared
- Steps taken to date (diagnosis, isolation - if required, medication start date, dates of vet checks)
- Type/ amount/ route of medication, inc. initials
- Feeding/ watering, defecation (inc. urates), BCS
- Protocols for quality of life/ end of life assessments
What preventative measures to stop disease occurring/ being transmitted can you think of?
- Quarantine new individuals/ those that could have been exposed to a contagious disease
- Isolate infected individuals
- Barrier nursing
- Good husbandry practices
- Vaccinations
- Prophylactic treatments
- Biosecurity protocols
- Proper disposal of waste
