Reproductive system Flashcards
What are gonads
Paired testes in males & usually a single ovary in females
When will testes grow
When they reach sexual maturity
What colour are immature or inactive testes
Yellow
Where are sperm cells formed
Tubules
Why do testes turn white
Because of the start of breeding season and due to the growing seminiferous tubules
What are the 3 extra embryonic membranes and what do they do
Amnion - surrounds the embryo and
Chorion - serves as a protective membrane
Allantois - grows as the embryo grows
What is a clutch
Amount of eggs a bird lays per each nesting attempt
What are 2 types of egg laying
Determinate egg layers - laying a set number of eggs in their clutch, not replacing eggs that are removed or destroyed
Indeterminate egg layer - replacing eggs that are lost or removed form their clutch - Chickens or ducks
What aspects of bird breeding do you think is important to consider for a bird breeding plan?
Private parts
Environment - nesting
- food availability
- migrate
- relations
What are the 2 different types of breeders
Continuous breeders - reproduce throughout the year - Chickens
Opportunistic breeders - breed during certain cycles or when conditions are favourable - parrots
What are different breeding triggers
Day length (photoperiod)
Temperature changes
Humidity changes
Rainfall
Presence of other birds
Availability of suitable nesting areas
Hormonal cascade / sexual maturity
