Whats the difference between travlers diarrhea and food poisoning
Travlers diarrhea is caused by ingestion of pathogens while food poisoning is caused by ingestion of preformed toxins
Who gets travlers diarrhea and how?
30-70% of people who travel gets travlers diarrhea depending on destination and season they travel to. It is transmitted by fecal- oral route or person to person. Usually contaminated food or water.
Which bacterical pathogens causes travlers diarrhea?
Escherichia coli (EHEC, ETEC), camphylobacter jejuni, Shigella spp., Salmonella spp.
Which viruses causes travlers diarrhea?
Noro virus, Rota virus and astro virus
Which parasites causes travlers diarrhea?
Giardia lamblia, entamoeba histolytica, cryptosporidium
Non-pathogenic reasons fro travlers diarrhea?
Spicey food and different diet
Clinical features of travlers diarrhea?
Vomiting, diarrhea and low- grade fever, sometimes abdominal cramps.
Diagnosis of travlers diarrhea?
Microscopy and culture of stool. Serotyping to identify EPEC and EHEC
Treatment of travlers diarrhea?
Mainly rehydration, antibiotics is reserved for systemic infections ( fluoroquinolones)
Most common cause of travlers diarrhea?
bacterial 80-90% of cases. Usually E.coli strains.
